CT Science Center: Insider Tips

We visited the Connecticut Science Center recently and wanted to share with you some insider information that we took away from our visit.

Did You Know:

  • The quietest time to visit, is when the weather is nice outside and in the late afternoons (school/camp groups who are visiting, usually arrive around 10am and leave around 2pm) so anytime after 2pm would be ideal, please note closing time is at 5pm.
  • You can bring your own lunch (check out the gorgeous outdoor seating)! Milk your visit and take a stroll on the Riverfront!
  • Psst, while you are there, check out the Solar and Wind Powered Air Monitoring Station. You can also order lunch at Subway (located inside the Science Center) and try the Subway app for convenient ordering (downtime is uptime).
  • Bike Racks are available, which you can also use for a stroller – just remember to bring a lock. Note: There are also small indoor lockers available during your visit.
  • Save room for dessert because there is a Froyo World on site.
  • Over the Summer also be sure to stop and enjoy the rooftop garden – perfect time to get some sun, while little one’s nap.
  • You can just see a movie! No need to pay for admission to the Science Center to do so.
  • Did you know they have overnights? Yes, and the next one is on Friday, October 20th.

Have you seen their new Butterfly Exhibit yet?

The Science Center recognizes:

  • Homeschoolers: Tuesday – Sunday from 10am – 5pm and admission is $11 per person (proper homeschool identification is required) and movies are $6 per person. Discovery Center Programs for K-9 are also available for 10 students for an additional $7.50 per person and they can be run at 9:45am, 11am, 12:15pm, 1:30pm and 2:45pm. Homeschoolers also save 15% on all memberships.
  • Scouts: Come on a special just for Scouts (Scout Day) or take advantage of Scout Group Pricing and come any day with your troop for a visit full of hands-on fun.
    • Scouts Day: Scouts visiting on special days will experience additional fun programming including Live Science. Complete the scout activity for the day and receive a brand new Connecticut Science Center Fun Patch. New patches are created for each event. Collect them all. The next Scout Day will be on December 9-10th and it’s on Robotics.
  • Group Outings: Come any day with 10 or more participants and benefit from group pricing. Invite your child’s classmates or organize a group playdate!
  • Special Needs: Sensory-friendly days for those with special needs. The next sensory friendly day is on Wednesday, October 4th. You will also save $2.95 if you purchase your ticket in advance and online.

General admission is $23.95 for an adult and $16.95 for a child (ages 3-17). Children under 2 are always free.

Membership Tips:

  • If you plan on visiting the Science Center at least three times in one year, a membership may be worth it.
  • If you want to experience your first visit before deciding, pay normal admission and you have 30 days to decide to become a member and just pay the difference.
  • If you decide the day off you will save $10 if you become a member before you leave.

The Science Center also has many perks for its members

  • unlimited admission all year with no extra charge for special events;
  • your membership is fully tax-deductible as the Science Center in a non-profit organization;
  • you receive flat rate parking which is $5 no matter how long you stay;
  • the Science Center has rotating reciprocals with other museums; now until October 2017 it is the Connecticut Beardsley Zoo, so you can get in there for free; the future reciprocal museum is Mystic Aquarium at Norwalk in January 2018, then in March it’s the Mystic Aquarium.
  • the Science Center hosts previews of new exhibits exclusively for members;
  • express entry – skip the line even during the busiest times;
  • movies are $2 less at $5;
  • if you decide to sign up for a camp, birthday party or purchase something from the gift shop or Froyo World you will save 10% with your membership card.
  • you also get discounts at local area restaurants: Bear’s Smokehouse, City Steam Brewery, The Blind Pig, Qdoba, Ted’s Montana Grill and Vivo Seasonal Trattoria.

Hartford residents got free admission to the Science Center for the month of August, which was available through the Hartford Public Library.

There is a gift shop on site, and a few interesting things about it are:

They carry an exclusive collection for Science Centers only.

One of their biggest sellers is the Himalayan Rock Salt Lamps!

Take a selfie with their LEGO statue – yes they also sell LEGO products.

As part of the Dino Trail, they carry hundreds of dinosaur related products!

We thought the Venus Fly trap was pretty cool and it reminded me of the Little Shop of Horrors!

Another tip:

I visited on a Monday afternoon and was able to find two-hour street parking for $2.

The parking meter kiosks also display local event info – or of course you have Momford County!

The Connecticut Science Center also offers ample programs for adults including workshops, luncheons, teacher training, as well as an annual gala and a quarterly Museum After Dark Program, which they call Liquid Lounge
