Playhouse on Park

In addition to their year-round production offerings, Playhouse on Park in West Hartford is also proud to offer a variety of educational offerings for grades K – Adult. Theater education strengthens self-confidence, team building, listening and responding skills, and can instill a lifelong passion for the arts. Playhouse on Park strives to teach students theater technique in a professional and comfortable environment.

Youth Class Offerings:

Creative Kids (Grades K-1): Children will be introduced to theater through creative play. Exercises and games will focus on acting, story telling, puppetry, music, and movement. A story will often be included. By the end of the class, students should be using their bodies and voices to start to create characters. Though the emphasis of the class will be on developing skills and not on a final performance, family and friends are invited to the last class to see students present a short script. This class is for all kindergartners and for first grade students who are new to the program. Mondays, 4:30 – 5:30pm, Fee: $120. There is a once a year additional $15 registration fee. Classes start Monday, January 9th and run until March 20th. No class on January 16th and February 20th. Snow day March 27th.

Creative Kids Plus (Grades 1-2): Children will continue to study theater through creative play. Exercises and games will focus on acting, story telling, puppetry, music, and movement. A story will often be included. By the end of the class, students should be using their bodies and voices to create characters. Though the emphasis of the class will be on developing skills and not on a final performance, family and friends are invited to the last class to see students present a short script. This class is for first grade students who have already participated in the program, and for all second grade students.  Mondays, 5:45 – 6:45pm. Fee: $120. There is a once a year additional $15 registration fee. Classes start Monday, January 9th. Classes start Monday, January 9th and run until March 20th. No class on January 16th and February 20th. Snow day March 27th.

Young Actors (Grades 3-4): Students will participate in games, exercises, and scenes to allow them to gain comfort and technique in portraying a character onstage. Topics will include basic scene work, story telling, puppetry, and movement. Though the emphasis of the class will be on developing skills and not on a final performance, family and friends are invited to the last class to see students present poems, monologues, or scenes. This class is for all third grade students and for fourth graders who are new to the program. Wednesdays, 4– 5pm. Fee: $120. There is a once a year additional $15 registration fee. Classes start Wednesday, January 11th and run until March 8th. Snow day March 15th.

Young Actors Plus (Grades 4-5): Students will participate in games, exercises, and scenes to allow them to increase their comfort and technique in portraying a character onstage. Topics will include basic scene work, story telling, puppetry, and movement. Though the emphasis of the class will be on developing skills and not on a final performance, family and friends are invited to the last class to see students present poems, monologues, or scenes. This class is for fourth grade students who have already participated in the program, and for all fifth grade students. Wednesdays, 5:15 – 6:15pm. Fee: $120. There is a once a year additional $15 registration fee. Classes start Wednesday, January 11th and run until March 8th. Snow day March 15th.

Actor Performance Training Program (Grades 5-8): This class is for middle school students who are interested in improving their acting and performance technique. This class will be broken into three units to allow for in-depth study of various acting topics. Students will first study improv and ensemble building, then will move on to an in-depth study of creating a character using techniques for voice and body. For the final unit, students will be asked to incorporate what they have learned throughout the year into a devised theater piece. The program will conclude with a showcase where they perform their original ensemble-generated performance. This class is for fifth graders who have already taken a Playhouse on Park acting class and have permission from the instructor, plus all sixth through eighth grade students. Tuesdays, 5:30 – 7pm. Fee: $600. There is a once a year additional $15 registration fee. Classes started on October 4th and run until May 30th. No class February 21st, March 21st, April 11th, and June 6th. Snow days: March 21st and June 6th.

Adult Class Offering:

Adult Intermediate ImprovisationThis class continues work on the fundamental principles of improvisation while introducing more short-form improv games. We will focus on concepts such as status, tilt and re-incorporation and we will explore using the environment and non-linear narrative. The emphasis will be on character work, creating narratives and playing with commitment. Performance at the end of class. Prerequisite: Introduction to Improv or permission form the instructor. For ages 18 and up. Mondays, January 16th – March 6th, 2017 from 7-10pm. Cost of semester – $200. Class Show: March 7th. In case of snow cancellation, final class will be March 13 with class show on March 14.

Private Acting Lessons: Individualized coaching with the Artistic Director are available.

In cases of inclement weather, Playhouse on Park educational programs follow the West Hartford Public School schedule. If West Hartford Schools close early or are closed for the day, Playhouse on Park classes will not run, and the missed class will be rescheduled.

In an effort, to better acclimate myself with this venue and their educational offerings, my daughter will be enrolled in the Winter Session of Creative Kids Plus and we will share our insight on their program both with the venue and our readers.

In addition, they are happy to work with you to customize a program that might be right for your school, boy scout or girl scout troop, or organization; whether it is for a weekly class, a summer program, an internship, a master class, a field trip, or a workshop.
