Monday, January 2nd:

8am – 3pm: Fitness Frenzy Start your New Year with fitness and activities for the whole family. For one day only we are opening our doors to the entire community to share in the fitness and fun. Work out in our state-of-the-art Fitness Center with cardio equipment and weight room. Bring your swim suit and splash around in our 25-yard indoor lap pool, training pool, and whirlpool. Try out one of our renowned Group Exercise classes, or two, or three! Including Spinning, Zumba, Yoga, BodyPump and more. Shoot hoops in our gymnasium, complete with basketball courts. Free and open to the community. No registration required. Mandell JCC, West Hartford

1 – 2:30pm: Storybook Cooking Ms. Suzanne is adding a new twist to her preschool cooking class this session! She has decided to combine stories and cooking. Each week the class will read a food themed story and then make a recipe to correspond with the story. We are going to be trying new recipes and practicing our skills in the kitchen. Gluten free options are often available with prior notification. As always, our studio and our recipes are nut free. Classes are taught by Ms. Suzanne and Mr. Josh. $30 per class. 1 – 4pm: First Birthday Bash Celebrate our first year in the Valley with a big Birthday Party! Monday, 1/2 – Tuesday, 1/31:

Monday – Saturday at 10:30am and 3:30pm, Sunday only at 3:30pm: Lars the Little Polar Bear is a story about a young polar bear who explores his arctic home, meeting friends along the way. Children will learn about the arctic climate, the animals that live here, and how to find the Big and Little Dipper in the night sky. The Children’s Museum, West Hartford

12pm and 2:30pm: Let It Snow A Christmas Musical Journey in the Planetarium combines animated holiday images with classic Christmas music under the Travelers Science Dome Planetarium. This is a family friendly program and perfect for all ages. The Children’s Museum, West Hartford

6:30 – 8:30pm: Cookie Decorating Class Learn how to create sweet designs on cookies with buttercream icing and sprinkles. Supplies are not included and may cost up to $31. Michaels

Tuesday – Saturday from 10am – 4pm: Hill-Stead for the Holidays The former Pope family mansion is decorated for the holidays. Thursday, January 5th:

9am – 4pm: Bird Day Learn about winter birds in Connecticut. Included with the cost of admission. The Children’s Museum, West Hartford

4:15 – 6pm: Rainbow Cooking and Science We will be making a beautiful rainbow cake with a rainbow surprise inside! Each child will make one colored layer of the cake. While the cake is baking, we will explore rainbows through science. Ages 5 – 10. Drop-off class. $25 per child. The Little Green Tambourine, Canton

Friday at 6:30pm, Saturday at 3pm and 6:30pm and Sunday at 1:30pm and 5pm: Boar’s Head & Yule Log Festival One of the highlights of the Music and Arts Ministry of Asylum Hill Congregational Church is the annual Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival—a celebration of Epiphany through music, dancing, pageantry and live animals. Demand is heavy for the 4,000 available tickets. The addition of local dance ensembles and a fresh approach to music and staging, as well as the addition of court visitors from other lands enables the festival to showcase other music and cultural organizations brings and brings renewed energy and vision to the festival. This culminating event of the holiday season continues to attract new people to this active and friendly church. All are invited to Drew Hall after the performance for a gala reception where the ferocious boar’s head, the mince pie and many of the festival properties are on display. Saturday, January 7th:

9am – 3pm: Inventions Find out what’s inside those busted devices at home. Bring in stuff for our take-apart lab, and while we can’t guarantee we can get it running, we will find out how it ticks. You’ll learn how to make simple machines and complex gadgets with LEGO and you can even earn a “PrimeTime Patent” for your invention! $200 for three weeks of classes. 1 – 2pm: Free Intro to Yoga Feel better. Get stronger. Breathe deeper. Start now! Not sure where to start? We offer a free Introduction to Yoga class one Saturday each month from 1:00-2:00 pm. Our teachers will introduce you to basic yoga postures and techniques, and you will have an opportunity to visit our warm and spacious studios. 6 – 9pm: Explore the Night Walks Miss Judy invites you to bring your friends and family for a fun night of learning about the great outdoors. The general format includes an inside introduction to the evening program, an outside walk, a warm fire with Smores or something baked in the fire, a short walk outside to check the night sky, and of course family socializing with other night explorers. Dress in layers for the weather conditions that day it can get very cold on these winter nights. Because of unknown winter conditions, the Winter Exploration outside walk format will vary based on snow and ice conditions during January and February. Hopefully we can include some snowshoeing and ice skating each evening. The Welcoming Spring program in March will have us exploring the wetlands and forest for the sounds of spring peepers and wood frogs along with glimpses of early spring plants. 1:30 – 3:30pm: Nature’s Secrets on the Weekend This winter join Miss Judy for a fun weekend afternoon of learning something new about the great outdoors. The program format is an indoor introduction about the day’s topic followed by a hands-on outdoor activity to try out what you learned. Dress in layers so you can be comfortable for the indoor introduction and be warm enough for the outdoor activity. Saturday programs include Just Sleeping Winter Away in January for those curious about the animals that hibernate. Sunday programs include Wood Ducks at Winding Trails in January to discover the history of wood ducks in Connecticut, their mating displays, and how we monitor them. $10 per non-member family. 8:30 – 10am: Registry Completion Event The big day is almost here! Have you gotten everything you need and want? 10:30am – 2:30pm: Brunch with Hiroya Tsukamoto In celebration of Utamaro and the Lure of Japan, enjoy a special Sunday brunch in the Museum Café featuring live music by Japanese composer, singer, and guitarist Hiroya Tsukamoto. Tickets include museum admission. There are two seatings, one at 10:30 am and one at 12:30 pm. The brunch buffet features the Chef’s egg dish of the day, homefries, root vegetable hash, bacon, sausage, bagels and assorted cream cheeses, Belgian waffles with fixins’, and assorted breakfast pastries. 11am- 4pm: Families Learn Together: Blast Off Each month, we will explore a different theme with educational demonstrations, hands-on activities, and fun take-away projects to encourage learning at home. Many of our days will feature guest educators, scientists, artists and other professionals within their fields. The theme for January 8 is title “Blast Off” and will feature planetarium shows that focus on space travel and exploration, live astronomy shows in our Starlab and making straw rockets for the younger crowd. The planetarium shows will include Secret of the Cardboard Rocket, Astronaut, Back to the Moon for Good, and From the Blue Planet to the Red Planet. Starlab is a portable planetarium and provides a unique experience to look in-depth at the unspoiled night sky. Families will get a chance to travel the solar system to meet your planetary neighbors as they journey to exotic worlds and strange moons. Included with the cost of admission. 3pm: Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood LIVE! The legacy of the beloved “Mister Rogers Neighborhood” lives on with the award- winning television series, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, from The Fred Rogers Company and PBS KIDS. Now, Daniel and his friends are hopping aboard the trolley to delight live audiences with Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood LIVE! Donning his iconic red sweater, Daniel invites the audience on an interactive musical adventure as he and his friends explore their much-loved Neighborhood of Make-Believe. Through the show’s familiar themes and music, the neighbors share stories of friendship, helping others and celebrating new experiences in this live theatrical production filled with singing, dancing, laughter and “grr-ific” surprises that will warm the hearts of multiple generations.
