Weekly Happenings 11/17-11/23

National Novel Writing Month happens every November! It’s a fun, seat-of-your-pants writing event where the challenge is to complete an entire novel in just 30 days. For one month, you get to lock away your inner editor, let your imagination take over, and just create! That means participants begin writing November 1 and must finish by midnight, November 30. The word-count goal for our adult program is 50,000 words, but the Young Writers Program allows 17-and-under participants to set reasonable, yet challenging, individual word-count goals.

Tuesday, November 18 at 7pm | Hartford | Read It and Sleep | WNPR reporter Jeff Cohen lit up the Internet when he interviewed his daughters Eva and Sadie about a sister haircut gone very wrong. Now he’s written a book about it. Come over to Charter Oak Cultural Center and Jeff will read the book. Kids, bring your parents. Snacks served. Each family can take home a copy of the book.

Wednesday, November 19th from 5 to 6pm | Hartford | Open House | Annie Fisher Montessori Magnet hosts an Open House for prospective students.

Wednesday, November 19th from 6 to 7:30 pm | West Hartford | “Adventures in Mindfulness for Parents and Childcare Providers”  with presenter Ann Sullivan, M.S. | Learn proven techniques to help you and your child become more mindful of your thoughts and actions – and ease stress for all at St. Brigid’s School. Dinner provided, childcare (age 3 and up) by reservation, and door prizes! Please RSVP by Tuesday, November 18th to RSVPGreatBy8@gmail.com.

Thursday, November 20 | 6-7:30pm | Bristol | Girls Night Out: Noodle Mania | Nothing says tradition like a family recipe. Passed on within the family its preparation and enjoyment brings forth memories of family gatherings. Tonight we’ll make pasta noodles from scratch, just like Great Grandma used to make. Girls this is a FREE program for girls ages 8-13 and their mentors, mothers, or a special friend!

Friday, November 21 | 9:30–10:30am & 11:30am–12:30pm | Newington | Thanksgiving Toddler Book and Bite | Today is all about Thanksgiving! We will create a fun turkey and cheese sandwich plate complete with apple “feathers” and bake some cheesy crescent roll leaves. Then we will frost and decorate a mini turkey cupcake. Children will enjoy the meal while we read some Thanksgiving books. Ages 2-4, $15 per child (adult must accompany child)

Friday, November 21-Sunday, November, 23 | Manchester | South Pacific | Our November production will be the first-ever LTM staging of the classic musical, South Pacific. Based on James A. Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1947 book, Tales of the South Pacific, the play features wonderful, memorable music by Rodgers and Hammerstein, including the classic “Some Enchanted Evening.” Way ahead of its time, the play was one of the first to explore the topic of interracial romance and prejudices, but doing so with humor and great compassion. Still popular today, the play was revived on Broadway in 2008 and was a critical success, winning seven Tony Awards.

Saturday, November 22 | 9:30am-5pm | National Family Volunteer Day! | In collaboration with the United Way of West Central CT and community families, we promote the spirit of volunteerism. Create napkin rings complete with a festive napkin for individuals at neighborhood shelters, nursing homes and Bristol Hospital. Participating families enjoy free admission!

Saturday, November 22 at 10am | Babies R Us | Baby’s First Christmas for babies born August 2014 – November 2014. Enjoy fun activities including story time, crafts and more! Meet other parents celebrating Baby’s First Christmas.

Saturday, November 22 | 11am-4pm | Bristol | Kids’ Carnival | Carousel rides, magic shows, carnival games, prizes, arts and crafts, face painting, balloon art, vendors, music, food and more… Children are FREE adults are $6.

Saturday, November 22 | 11am-12pm & 1-2pm | Hartford | Secrets of the Veeder House Tour | When Asylum Avenue still passed through cow pastures, Curtis Veeder built a grand home with an elevator, central vacuum, and even an indoor car wash. This special tour highlights features of the 1928 house that is now the Connecticut Historical Society that are not regularly accessible to the public. Come unlock the secrets of the Veeder House and learn more about the historic house and the history of its West End neighborhood. Tours last approximately 45 minutes and are appropriate for ages 12 and up.

Sunday, November 23 | 10am | West Hartford | Holiday Decorating | From festive mantels and entryways to glistening treetops and beyond, learn how to decorate your home for the holidays.

Sunday, November 23 | Noon – 4pm | Canton | Holiday Craft Fair | Start your holiday shopping with nature-related gifts for all ages. Handmade crafts include candles, pottery, jewelry, soaps and many other items made by local artisans. The proceeds from the Fair, held by The Friends of Roaring Brook Nature Center, benefit the Nature Center’s programs and activities.

Through Sunday, November 23 | Hartford | Wicked | Back by “popular” demand. Variety calls Wicked “a cultural phenomenon,” and it continues to break box office records across North America. Winner of over 100 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, Wicked is “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” (The New York Times). Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One – born with emerald green skin – is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for “the most complete – and completely satisfying – musical in a long time” (USA Today). Recommended for children 8 and older. Children under 4 not permitted, Hartford.

Through December 24 | West Hartford | Experience the Ice Palace | West Farms Mall in celebration of the November 18 release of the Disney Frozen Sing-Along Edition on DVD & Digital HD, West Farms presents a Frozen Ice Palace experience. The Ice Palace will feature characters from the number one animated film of all time, Disney Frozen. This much-loved, interactive holiday display features the art of Anna, Elsa and their friends Olaf, Kristoff and Sven, plus a 30 foot Ice Palace with falling snow, a light show and other activities for the whole family. Interactive globes will showcase scenes such as Anna & Elsa ice skating with Olaf, plus Anna, Kristoff & Sven on their quest to find Elsa on the North Mountain. Adults & children alike will enjoy leaving their hand print in ice at The Icy Hand Print experience, seeing how they compare in size to Sven & Olaf and having their photo taken with Olaf at the Ice Throne. End your magical journey at the Ice Palace with a visit to Santa and a special Disney Frozen Look-and-Find book!

Through January 15 | Online | Tickets go on sale for Kids on Broadway in NYC. On Kids’ Night on Broadway, young people age 6-18 can see a participating Broadway show for free when accompanied by a full-paying adult.
